It’s Friday night, early for us, in the venue by 7 for the support slot from Kaeto, a Scottish singer who has been making a name for herself over the last couple of years (previously supporting Haim, for one).
We expect the place to be dead, her set accompanied by talking, sporadic accidental applause and musicians playing more for themselves than anyone else – but not the case. The Ritz is rammed pretty much from the get go and it’s hot. Thank goodness the drinks are eleventy-hundred pounds a pint.
Taking the stage with a band in tow, all eyes are on Kaeto and she performs like Bleachers are supporting her. Her songs are unfamiliar to the majority of people but there’s a beat that gets heads bobbing wherever you look. She treats us to ‘No Body’, a tune from 2023 that rocks the joint to the rafters, and new single, ‘Don’t Ask’ (which sounds to these tired ears like Sia fronting Sault).
What Kaeto does really well is just what you want from a support – she raises the temperature in the room, makes you feel like you were right to set out early to check out some new music and leaves you feeling like, next time she plays, you want to see a headline set from her.
